A 54 - year- old community leader, Peter Igboeli, was on Friday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly punching and breaking two of the wife ’ s fingers with a pestle.
The accused is facing a two - count of assault and threat to life. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Sgt . Kehinde Omisakin , told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in April 2013 and in June 2017 , at the Trade Fair Complex, Alaba, in Lagos.
She said that the accused assaulted his wife, Anthonia Igboeli, by punching her in the face and using a pestle to hit her, breaking two of her fingers. Omisakin said that the accused had also threatened to burn down the shop of the complainant.
The offences contravened Sections 56 ( 1 ) and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. T. Elias , granted the accused bail based on self recognaisance and adjourned further hearing until August 7.
