Kilishi, a healthy snack for weightloss

Kilishi is a delicacy that originated from Hausa land in Nigeria. It is made from either cow or goat meat after the bones is removed. Though likened to Suya, Kilishi differs in method of preparation and texture. Kilishi is a meaty snack made from lean beef and infused with a number of nutritious spices like: garlic, ginger, onion, etc. Amazingly, you don’t have to worry about preservation as Kilishi can last for the period of six months to one year (it has to be stored in a cool and dry place.

Recent research has revealed Kilishi to be
a healthy snack with a lot of health benefits. Kilishi is protein-filled and retains its nutritious value despite being dried. It doesn’t go through various procedures like processed beef goes through like cooking, salting, frying, fermentation, smoking, etc. These procedures tend to negatively alter the protein content of the beef.

The focus point here is that snacking on Kilishi between meals is ideal if you’re trying to lose weight. What better way to get protein into your diet than an enjoyable snack? This is more efficient in a protein-high diet. It’s simple; gradually lower/terminate carb intake, double up on the protein, include a regular exercise routine and you’re in for weight loss without dropping muscle mass.

An amazing fact about Kilishi is that it does not increase your insulin level at all. Insulin is one of the hormones that largely affect how your body stores fat. Moderation is important when consuming Kilishi especially if the end goal is weight loss. Snack on small portions of Kilishi at a time; don’t gorge on it. Avoid making a full meal out of it.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT KILISHI

LOW FAT: during the preparation of Kilishi, the meat is stripped of fat and whatever fat is left, dries up during the drying process. This means that Kilishi is very low in fat.

HIGH PROTEIN: the high protein content of Kilishi cannot be overemphasized. Protein consumption boosts the body metabolism resulting in weight loss.

CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH: one of the ingredients used in the preparation of Kilishi is garlic. Garlic is very good for the heart. The anti-oxidant properties of Allicin (found in garlic) help to lower cholesterol levels. Among other health benefits of garlic, regular consumption of garlic helps regulate blood pressure and blood sugar.

LOW CARB: Kilishi is free of carbs except on the rare occasion when commercial producers add small amounts of sugar.
Rather than snack on biscuits, candy, chips and the likes, Kilishi is a healthy and better choice.
